Google Unveils AI-Powered Initiatives to Protect Nature & Wildlife

📅 Google launches a start-up accelerator, a $3M conservation grant, and an AI model for wildlife monitoring to fight biodiversity loss and climate change.

Google is expanding its efforts to fight biodiversity loss and climate change with three new AI-driven initiatives.

1️⃣ AI for Nature & Climate Accelerator

Google is launching a 10-week accelerator program for startups using AI to protect and restore ecosystems. The program provides mentoring, technical support, and networking opportunities. Start-ups in the Americas can apply until March 31, 2025, with the program starting in May.

2️⃣ $3M Grant for AI-Powered Conservation

Google.org is providing $3 million to Brazilian non-profits using AI for:
✔️ Biodiversity protection – Supporting global efforts to conserve 30% of land and oceans by 2030.
✔️ Sustainable economy – Strengthening forest-based businesses and Indigenous territories.
✔️ Regenerative agriculture – Helping small farmers use eco-friendly farming methods.

3️⃣ SpeciesNet: AI for Wildlife Monitoring

Google is releasing SpeciesNet, an AI model that identifies animal species from camera trap photos. Since 2019, scientists have used it to track biodiversity through Google Cloud’s Wildlife Insights platform. The open-source release allows researchers and start-ups to scale conservation efforts.

AI is revolutionizing environmental protection, and these initiatives aim to make a real impact.
